History

Prior to the formation of the Cashtown Community Fire Department, the only fire protection in the community was provided by a two-wheeled cart. It carried 200 feet of hose and was purchased by the Cashtown Water Company in 1895. The Cashtown Community Fire Department was founded on November 21, 1923. By 1924 when the department conducted its first solicitation, they had 156 charter members. The first main fundraiser was the annual fair held in February of the same year. Both fundraisers are still active today. Department records show that the department purchased their first fire truck in 1925. It was a 1925 Brockway. The truck was housed at Daniel Mickley's Cashtown Garage. In 1931, the department purchased a tract of land across from the garage and erected a two-bay concrete engine house. That engine house was used by the department until it was replaced by the present day engine house in 1975. The engine house is located at 1069 Old Route 30, Cashtown. In 1933, realizing the need for additional room for fundraising and the annual fair, the department purchased the POS of A hall in 1933. The department added a large dining hall and kitchen to the structure in 1956. This building not only serves the department, but also the needs of the community. In 1945, the department added another fire truck, a 1945 Ford with a Front mounted pump and several hundred fee of hose on the rear body. In 1951 the Cashtown Community Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary was formed. This organization is still very active today. The ladies provide much needed financial and moral support to the fire department. The 1925 Brockway was replaced in 1963 with a 1963 Ford pumper with a front mount 500 gallon per minute pump and tank. In 1968, the department replaced the 1945 with a 1968 Ford Pumper with a front mount 750 gallon per minute pump and 500 gallon tank and ran the 1945 as a third engine. In the mid-1970's, the Junior Fire Department was started. The Junior department is still active today and meets on the first and third Monday of the month. The Junior department is always looking for new members. In 1979, the department formed what would later become the Quick Response Service or QRS. This was done to provide initial care to our residents as Cashtown did not have an ambulance. The department used a 1950's model converted Army ambulance that the members had converted and repaired in their spare time. The unit was known as Rescue 4 and the department used this unit until it retired in 1991 and replaced with a 1990 International Chassis with a Swab box. The current unit is Squad 4. In 1984, the department retired the 1945 fire engine and replaced it with a 1984 Ford fire engine with an American mid-ship pump. This unit is currently in service today and is known as Engine 4-3. In 2001, the department replaced the 1963 Ford pumper with a 2001 Pierce Dash engine. This unit is known as Engine 4-1. Around 2003, the department retired and sold the 1968 Ford pumper. Other apparatus the department has had and used are as follows: A 1950 Willys Jeep used as a Chief's vehicle. This unit was placed out of service in the mid 1980's. A 1954 Dodge Army pickup truck converted to a brush truck. This unit was used until it was replaced in 1997 with a 1987 Chevy 5/4 ton pickup converted to a brush truck. The 87 Chevy was obtained from the PA Forestry, and is still in service today. It is known as Brush 4.
